The Facts Of Life With This Bunkhouse Trailer

Like every tent I have ever set-up, this one has it’s quirks.

This is an older model, but the engineering is solid. It’s not some funky old model that died because it wasn’t good. The fiberglass trailer body and chassis is the same one used on Bunkhouse trailers today. Where this trailer differs is in the tent design.

Bunkhouse was an innovator in lightweight tent trailers for motorcycle towing. The Bunkhouse design is emulated by many manufacturers of motorcycle tent trailers because it is functional, lightweight and roomy.

Tent portion of this trailer is in three parts:

1. The sleeping tent which pops open in about 10 seconds. It’s easy for one person to set-up.

2. The canopy, which consists of a heavy-duty vinyl awning which zips to the crest of the sleeping tent. The canopy is cantilevered out from the corners of the bed platform on two u-shaped poles. The canopy can be left in place while traveling but it’s quite tricky for one person, with no help, to open the tent with the canopy zipped to the crest. The solution is to either have help or unzip the awning from the crest of the tent.

3. The vestibule which zips and snaps to the canopy and sleeping tent, joining all the parts together for a bug-proof and comfortable tent area big enough to fit some camp chairs in. If just stopping for the night or if the weather is nice you might not want to put it on, because there is a lot of zipping to be done.

I don’t think it’s practical to travel with the vestibule zipped to the sleeping tent and awning – but I’ve never tried because it’s a lot of material to handle when setting-up or packing up. Your own experience might be different.

The fabric all matches for everything, heavy-duty waterproof vinyl for the top and brown nylon for the sides. The awning and vestibule were sold as accessories when this trailer was new in 1994.

It’s important for you to understand that the poles these trailer companies use are not super-heavy-duty. They are plenty-strong but if you abuse them they will bend and if they bend too far the sliding ones won’t slide well. If bend really far a poll could develop an actual kink and then you’ll have to repair or replace it.

As it is lifting the bed to open the trailer requires “oomph” – it’s not hard but you when you do it you’ll understand why the manufacturer works so hard at balancing strength with light-weight.

The way to not mess-up the tubular poles is to follow the procedure shown in our video so they don’t get tweaked, twisted, bent, or broken. Learn not to strain the supports when you set-up and take-down the tent and you will have a lot of satisfaction. Get sloppy and you’ll probably end-up distorting a pole or two and have to kick yourself for your carelessness.

When I bought this trailer the previous owner had lent it to a friend who was clueless and bent some of the poles. I am extremely handy however and I repaired them in such a way that they are stronger than if you bought new ones from the factory – which is an expensive repair because the poles are long u-shaped supports which are so large shipping costs would be very high.

The design of this trailer is balanced for light-weight, not super-duty strength, like a lot of RV stuff in fact. Treat the trailer with a gentle touch and you’ll enjoy it a lot.

Last time I checked all the lights on the back and the running lights worked. I think one of the side lights might have been giving me trouble. I towed this with a car, not a bike so it’s set up with a 6-prong round wiring harness. You can switch it to whatever wiring harness you like if you need to – an easy project.

The tenting material of the trailer has had gentle wear. There are no holes I’m aware of but around the edges where it attaches to the bed there are some wear spots. There is discoloration of the heavy-duty waterproof vinyl roofing portions here and there. It’s not ugly, just the kind of stuff tents pick up when you use them in real camping situations.

Basically, the trailer is broken-in and has many more years of life left if you take care of it. When the time comes if you use it heavily or damage it somehow you can repair or replace the canvas, but for now it’s perfectly functional and will keep you dry and prevent bugs from biting you while you sleep.

You may want to invest in a small trailer-light set compatible with your vehicle – in the event that your vehicle doesn’t work right-away with this trailer’s wiring you can hook-up the light set (less than $50) and get it home safely without getting stopped for lighting problems. Wiring with trailers is always a funky thing – the best plan is to have a plan for something not working.

Unpack your tent and remove the restraining bag, this will cause the tent to ‘pop’ open. Turn the tent to right side up with the faced in its proper position. If you have to pitch it on an uneven or incline surface, make sure that the floor faces downhill to prevent flooding. Pop up tent campers should not open their tent nearby trees or large objects to prevent them from getting in the way of the ‘popping’ mechanism.

Secure the fastenings into the ground by pushing them through the loops. If the ground is hard, you will need to use a hammer or another hard object to push the pegs in. Tent campers should always have an extra peg on hand in case one of them gets lots or broken. After, secure the ropes to finish the job.

You can tell from the video that there are quite a few parts to keep track of for the Raclet Folding Camper. Although one man is assembling the folding camper, you’ve got to think of whether this will be practical for you. Will you have ample opportunity to practice the assembly prior to taking the Racelet on the road? What will it be like for you to attempt to assemble this folding camper in the dark after a long day on the road? Will you end up setting it up holding lanterns and flashlights while the children are asleep in the car? Will you just give up in frustration and sleep your first night in the car too?

Here’s the perfect camper for the small family – a rare tiny camper, the smallest model pop-up camper you can find!  My niece and her husband just bought this camper, it’s their first camper…  I didn’t ask them what the blue book camper would be, but I was curious!  Quite a step up from tent camping, and with two small boys they can really use the ease of their new home away from home! 

When I purchased my first RV I was excited and my wife and I immediately headed out to the woods for our first camping trip. The plan was to camp out for three days. The first night, my wife and I had a blast and stayed up late drinking vino and playing cards. We were running the lights, playing the radio and were oblivious to anything that could go wrong. The following morning when we woke up, we reached for a cold drink from the refrigerator and realized that the refrigerator was no longer working. Upon further inspection we realized that none of the lights, CO2 detector or anything else that relied on the RV battery was functional. My immediate reaction was that we must have purchased a lemon and I was furious.

We packed up that morning and immediately headed back to the place where we had purchased the RV. When I pulled into the parking lot the man who sold us the RV saw me and immediately walked over to see what was up. I told him that we had been camping overnight and that everything died and that we must have been sold a lemon. He immediately had a mechanic come out to take a look and he promptly determined that we had drained our battery. Thus began my education on RV power consumption, proper RV battery sizing, and alternative energy for RVs.

Our RV had a single battery installed. What I did not realize was that this was woefully inadequate. The reason that I did not realize this was because I had no idea how to determine how much power I needed vs. what I actually had available in a single battery. Understanding how much power you need takes some time to calculate and is a function of how many DC amps each electrical item in your RV is using, times the number of hours they will be used. For instance if your refrigerator is using 1 Amp per hour and you plan to run it for 24 hours, you need a battery that can supply 24 Amp Hours of power. That is why you often see deep cycle batteries used in RVs rated in Amp Hours. However, it gets even more complicated since you should never run a battery below 50% of capacity. Additionally, the refrigerator is not the only item drawing power. How about the lights, radio, CO2 detector, etc? These questions apply not only for rv’s, but for campers, pop-up trailers, tent trailers and folding campers.

When I took a year off to travel across country and purchased my second RV, things got even more complicated. I wanted to install an inverter and use several AC appliances such as a TV, satellite dish, internet satellite dish, laptop computer, etc. Since the inverter ran off of the battery bank and converted DC into AC power, I had to have a very good understating of how much power I needed so that I could not only size the battery bank appropriately, but also the inverter, and the solar panels that I was going to use to recharge the batteries daily. Converting DC into AC added a whole new dimension and set of calculations to the problem. Fortunately, it is not a difficult as it seems if you can find all the information you need in one place.

Although I was able to find information in various places on the web, I could not find it all in one place. That is why I created a website to document my install for others to learn from. What makes these chairs so good for camping, is that they are very easy to transport, but also very comfortable. As far as transportation goes, all you need to do is fold your chair up flat and it will fit inside your trunk, van, truck, or camper. When you want to use it all you need to do is pull it out, unfolded and you are ready to go. Most of these chairs way about 8 to 10 pounds depending on the size and model.

When choosing a good sphere chair for camping, you want to make sure you get one that can stand up to the elements. Most of the ones meant for outdoor use are made out of of material they can get wet. When you are camping, things get wet a lot in the last thing you want is to have a chair that will get ruined in the rain. Most sphere chairs will try within minutes if left in the sun or wipe down with a towel. Be aware that there are certain types that are meant for indoor use. These kind usually cost more, and come with a thick pad on them. Although this type is a lot more comfortable, you can get wet and they usually don’t fold up either.
